The Greatest Christmas Gift

Sitting at the holiday table watching my two lovely granddaughters with their innocent faces so bright... so full of the promise of things to come... I couldn't help but hear John Lennon's famous words ringing in my ears...

    And so it is Christmas
    And what have you done?
    Another year older.
And a new one just begun...
    A very Merry Christmas
    And a Happy New Year.
    Let's hope it's a good one
    without any fear.

Yes, I've gotten lax in the past year. I've fallen back to my old wasteful ways. Using plastic products, like plastic spoons, Styrofoam cups, and plastic water bottles (even though the petroleum used to make them pollutes our waterways and requires constant wars to ensure a steady supply of it); relying on paper napkins and plates (even though deforestation threatens the very air we breathe); using toxic cleaning products (filled with chemicals which could very well wind up in the drinking water). Let's face it...it's a pain in the neck to wash out those pet food cans and save them until recycling day; and those paper towels really do soak up a mess better than a cotton dish cloth, or a natural sponge ever could, and with a lot less work. But we must suck it up and recycle, just as we must demand that our leaders pursue alternate energy sources and global understanding and cooperation, because our grandchildren depend on us to leave them a world where they might fulfill the promising life ahead of them.
This idea is not new. For time eternal, the old have sacrificed for the perpetuation of the young. Our task is to have the wisdom to realize where to focus the sacrifice. New ages bring new challenges. Sure, money is a nice thing to leave them. But clean water and air, and a peaceful world in which to live, is the most important thing of all. With the disposable mentality we grew up with, we helped to create this problem. Let's dedicate ourselves to being part of the solution.

    And so it is Christmas
    And what have we done?
    Another year older.
And a new one just begun...
    A very Merry Christmas
    And a Happy New Year.
    Let's hope it's a good one
    without any fear!
