How to Pick a Wardrobe Winner
The first few year of my grand daughter's life, I delighted in buying clothes for the little one. With clear classics like Carters, HealthTex, and Baby Gap to choose from, I always picked winners. The first two years were easy. For that stage, the test of a good piece of clothing was that it be comfortable for the baby and easy for the mom and dad to put on the child. As long as it was soft, non-binding, had snaps to facilitate easy diaper changes, and didn't require any over the head gymnastics with a squirming baby in hand, I had a hit. After the first two years, however, it became harder and harder to pick a winner. Taste entered the equation, and I sensed that mine was "Old Fashioned". I got over it though, thanks to Dora. I noticed that anything with "Dora the Explore"r on it was perfect. Oh yes, my grand daughter likes the princess stuff, and Disney's Ariel is a preference, but even I feel good buying Dora stuff. At least with her little face on the clothing, I don't have to worry about whether I am fostering unrealistic ideas about knights in shining armor, that might mess up her idea of a "healthy" relationship sometime in the future. Dora is a curious little bilingual kid, who is constantly learning, and whose propensity for intelligent problem solving always results in good decision making. No worry about gender stereotyping there. Sarah's fascination with Dora will probably not last for long. She is already making some noises about wanting some items with Diego (Dora's male counterpart) on them. I know that through her childhood, idols will come and go, but for now, Dora reigns, and that's just fine with me. It sure made it easy for me to know that I should go for it when I saw these for two dollars each at a yard sale today. Thanks Dora!

I know exactly what you mean. My 5 yr old granddaughter likes Hello Kitty. I do try to stay away from clothes for the girls and I let my daughter pick for my 5 year old grandson and I pay for them. As for the two teenagers - just forget it.
