Our White House Garden Becomes a Reality!

Remember back in October when I showed you the video from the organization "Eat the View" ? This organization led a campaign to encourage the new President...whomever that might be...to plant a vegetable garden on the south lawn of the White House which would serve as an inspiration for us all to return to the earth and grow some of our own food. .Some of us supported the campaign by purchasing a virtual square inch of the proposed garden in the name of a loved one.  Many of us spread the word through blogs and online petitions. The idea spread and won the "On Day One" award, I am delighted to say that  today, Michele Obama and a group of Washington school children broke ground on just such a garden...yes...on the White House lawn. In celebration I present one of the videos that stirred so many into action and I congratulate the organizers of "Eat The View", the President and First Lady, and all of us, for inspiring change in a positive direction.Yes, We Can!

I've been helping my dad with his garden this year. I'm thoroughly enjoying it. It may not save that much money, by the time you pay for the cost of seedlings and water, but it certainly brings one closer to the earth. And you appreciate vegetables much more if you have grown them.

It is true that gardening is not without cost but besides the benefits that you mention, I enjoy the fact that I can control what goes into and on my food. I garden organically so when I eat my home grown produce, II am sure that no pesticides or harmful chemicals were used and compared to buying organic produce, there is a definate savings. But even if it were not so, the vitamin content of the produce has to be greater when you pick it and then eat it a few minutes later. How nice that you garden with your dad! One more big benefit. Time spent together...priceless!
