Greening Grandma's Cleaning
Rating: ![]()
A few months ago, inspired by the newfound belief that our new President might actually lead us to a "greening" of the planet, I decided that it was time for me to seriously begin doing my part to align my philosophy with my lifestyle and in essence, "Walk the Talk". I decided to start with evaluating my household product usage. Since then, my foray into "greening" my cleaning has been a very interesting one. It began with a lengthy label reading session at the supermarket; followed by a lengthy label reading session at the health food store; and moved next to a google search for information on how to make my own products. Manned with simple items from my grandmother's day, I set out to follow some of the simpler recipes. To my surprise and delight, I found that some homemade products have turned out to be just as effective as their counterparts on the supermarket shelf. For example, a mixture of water, white vinegar and rubbing alcohol has convinced me that I need never buy glass cleaner again... and then there are the others. Take the great white glob of melted Ivory Soap mixed with washing soda, haunting the cabinet under my sink (Take it Please!). So milky white and silky smooth it was as I heated it in the pot. It has since hardened into a strange glob of gook, defying each of my attempts to squeeze it out of the bottle and into the dishwater. As a result of this disaster, visitors now find a bottle of Seventh Generation Dish Washing liquid sitting next to my kitchen faucet...Hey, so I'm not a saint! The successes I plan to share with you all in the coming days. Hopefully, I will be able to also share with you the great feeling I get each time I realize that I have gotten the cleaning job done without polluting my grandchildren's environment.
Recipe for Homemade Glass Cleaner that really works:
Mix:
* One cup of rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol
* One cup of water
* One tablespoon of distilled white vinegar
Put combination in an empty spray bottle. Use old newspapers to wipe the sprayed glass clean thereby ensuring a streak-free shine while recycling some of those old newspapers.

Dear Nona,
I'm going to try the recipe. I have recently given up my dependence on T--- detergent and some other products for environmentally sound and animal testing free products and I couldn't be happier
