Again Peas - Reading with my Grandchild

"Again peas, again peas, again peas," my granddaughter pleads as she purposefully shoves Beach Creatures back onto my lap. It never ceases to amaze me how many times this child can listen to a book and still enjoy it. We are going on the 5th time in a row and she will not be distracted. My attention span is waning at this point, but she is still amazed at the picture of the glob of jelly on toast on one page, followed by the jellyfish on the next, or the treasure chest with the jewels, followed on the next page by an opened oyster holding a shiny pearl. She repeats the words over and over, practicing them and pronouncing them more proficiently each time that we walk through the pages. I think wistfully of some of the high school ESL students I have taught, and wish that a few of them could have focused on language acquisition with the intensity of this 21 month old. I marvel at her insatiable curiosity, as she turns the pages, delighted with anticipation at what lies around the bend of the next page, even though she already knows what to expect.  And so, I play it up, as if it were a surprise to me also, that the fish on the page after the hand saw was ... you guessed it ... a sawfish!  Finally we are on the last page, the surfer with his surf board. Together we circle the curve of the big wave with our fingers. I quickly pronounce "The End",  and put the book down attempting to move off the couch to start supper. "again peas!" I hear her chime. Oh well, I guess supper could wait a few more minutes. it seems the least I can do, after all, for a future president of the United States. Besides, that's why grandchildren are so much fun!

I love this post. My grandson is three years old and we, too, read the same books over and over again. I keep a library of used books that I bought from our library bookstore and runs to the place where I keep them every time he visits. Yeah, being a grandma is great! Keep up the good work.

Haha, it all sound so familiar!

My son who is 3 also loves reading his favorite "car" books over and over again. And it is amazing they enjoyed listening to the same story time and again.
