Mazel Tov Grandma Mary!

I met Mary at a food co-op meeting in the early 70's and immediately realized that we must be in the same soul group. We sort of "knew" each other, even though we had never met, and we have remained friends ever since.  You know, she is the kind of friend that you might not see for two years and then you call and the conversation seems to pick up right where it left off.  With her five children, I at first thought she was either crazy or a saint, then settled on saint when I saw the care and devotion with which she raised each one of them. When I met her I was on my first and she was on her third, so she sort of "showed me the ropes". When it came to handling babies, she taught me not to sweat "the small stuff" and how to ascertain what "the small stuff" was. It was Mary who let me in on the little secrets of navigating the public school system, like how to manage to get the teacher you wanted for your child, and more importantly, how to avoid getting the one you didn't.  It was Mary that I went to for advice when I had an appointment with the principal about what I had considered an "inappropriate" placement for my child...and she always knew what she was talking about. What I really appreciated the most was the fact that she was always appropriately indignant at any slight that might have befallen either of my children, and we all know how important that kind of support is in the uncharted path of first time motherhood.
With all this in mind, I was delighted when I heard that her oldest daughter gave birth last week to a healthy grandson. Latest word is that mother and baby are doing fine. I extend hearty congratulations to Mary on becoming a grandmother for the fourth time! He's a lucky little boy to be able to call her grandma and I wish Grandma and grandson many years of loving each other! Mazel Tov!
