Elmo and I are Proud of You!
The headlines today might have been about inflation statistics or gas price predictions for this coming summer, but the BIG news came this afternoon via my work computer when I opened my e mail to see the subject title announcing "Major Sarah News!". Inside was the announcement that Sarah had successfully used the potty for the first time today. Now we all know how exciting this is to a mommy who has probably changed over 3,000 diapers since the child's birth. And all of us who have ever potty trained a child know the precision timing involved in rushing the toddler to the potty quickly enough, after she announces "pee pee", to ensure success. The news wasn't lost on me. I was delighted! I told my classroom. They were all delighted! I told my colleague in the classroom next door. She has a toddler herself and is on her 3,000th diaper. She was delighted! "What is it about Potty training that brings such delight?", I wondered. Sure, the actual idea that there will come a time when the messy diaper changing job will no longer be necessary, is a real draw, but I think it is more than that. We were delighted for both Sarah and her Mommy and Daddy, not only because of what she had done, but for the fact that she had entered a new phase in her life training... a first giant step toward independence. As her mommy said in the e mail, "Hooray!"
Well, there I was at work with no way to give her a hug, a smile, a shout. Then I had an idea. I did a Google search for an e card and added the name of Sarah's favorite character in the search, who right now is Elmo. Wallah! In twenty seconds I found the most adorable animated "I'm Proud of You" greeting with Elmo dancing around on the computer, which I sent in care of her mom's e mail address, and I felt an instant part of the festivities. An animated e card is a great way to keep in touch with children, but this site is more than that. It is just full of great interactive activities, like Snuffy's Safari Game, or animated stories about the Sesame Street Characters that you read to the child. You could do these activities at your computer with your preschool grandchild on your lap as you would if you were reading a traditional book, or Long Distant grandparents could send the link for mom and child to enjoy together. Either way, your keeping in touch and sharing yet another fun time, and you can't beat the price!
