Following Your Bliss

What a shame that it is so dangerous to put a child's picture on the internet, because the pictures I took of my 18 month old grandaughter making scones with me yesterday, would bring a giant smile to anyone's face. So involved in being a cook, she stirred and pounded and rolled and patted and poured away, creating the most hilarious, and inedible scone imaginable, but therein lies the joy.  While I carefully followed the recipe on the package, envisioning the tasty, conventional product I would eventually produce, Sarah completely lost herself in the process. Each time I added an ingredient to my bowl, her little voice would name it, then look expectantly at me.  "Butter... butter... butter..." she quipped, until I dropped a little into her bowl, then she dove into it with her hands, sometimes the spoon. Not totally unaware of her surroundings, she did utter an occasional "uh oh!" as she looked down to see what had escaped her grasp, but basically her attention was on tasting and feeling and generally experiencing "cooking". The difference between us showed on our faces...mine was determined with purpose, hers reflected what the famous teacher of the human spirit and mythology, Joseph Campbell, referred to as "following one's bliss"...finding a pursuit which you are truly passionate about and giving yourself absolutely to it.

Afterwards, the floor was a white powdered mess, the table was covered with little fragments of dough, and the aproned child had to be changed from top to bottom, but it was all worth it because for a little while, in my kitchen, Sarah and her Nona were cooks, and all was right with the world.

Quite honestly, she didn't seem a bit interested in the scones when they came out of the oven. By then, all her attention was on the process of building with huge cardboard blocks, some the size of her arms.  Was she making a skyscraper?  A house? Who knew? Who cared? Sarah didn't and neither did I, because now we were builders working on a new adventure... and that's why Grandchildren are so much fun!
