Ideas for a "special" Valentine Gift

Valentine's Day is a perfect opportunity to do something really special for your grandchild.  The first thing to remember is that "special" to a child has little to do with "expensive".  The key to "special" for a child is "engaging".  The gifts that they remember the most are the ones that tickle their fancy by being unique and drawing them into the fun.  Here are a few suggestions for "special" Valentine's Day gifts for children aged 3-10.

  • Buy an over-sized Valentine's Day card.  Detach the front of the card and write your greeting on the back, then cut the greeting into puzzle-like pieces.  Send your grandchild a puzzle piece or two in an envelope each day for seven days before Valentine's Day.  In this day of e-mail, it is very exciting for a child to actually receive snail mail and to receive it for 7 whole days in one week is a real treat!
  • Tell your grandchild by phone that you will be sending him/her a picture of the most beautiful (handsome), smart, talented person in the whole world, then send a locker mirror (the kind that is unbreakable with magnetic backing).  They will be delighted when they look for the picture and realize that their reflection is the person you were describing.  It will be a real boost for their self-esteem.
This last idea was inspired by an activity handbook developed by The National Institute for Building Long Distance Relationships entitled Grandparenting From a Distance.

  • "Send your grandchild a homemade hug that he or she can wrap around him or herself", the booklet suggests.  Then it goes on to describe how to make the hug by attaching two felt hands that you have traced and cut out to a piece of material about a yard long and 5 inches wide.  When the child receives it he or she will be able to wrap this "hug" around him/her any time a hug from you is needed, knowing that the felt hands are a tracing of your hands and of course, knowing that you made the whole thing with unconditional love.
Please feel free to share any ideas that you have for similar "special" Valentines!

What a great idea. You can reuse the puzzle pieces over and over again. Also you could play a missing puzzle piece game to see if the child remembers what part of the card that is missing looks like.
